What Pisses Me Off: KYC/ID Verification

Most people have had to deal with them at least once in their lifetime; the dreaded KYC or Know Your Client/Know Your Customer. Now I get the goal is to prevent fraud, but recently I had to do an ID verification with a site that will remain nameless; in an industry that made over $70 billion USD in 2021.

So what is the point of ID Verification? It’s meant to stop people who aren’t supposed to use a service from using it. This also helps prevent issues like minors spending all of mommy and daddy’s money on selling video game skins.

What’s the problem? It’s really simple, often times it doesn’t actually work the way it’s intended.

Over the last week or so I’ve had to pull my hair out and at this point I’ve given up with the service, going so far as to give up and move on. The issue is that you need to find the balance between keeping customers safe and not making the userbase want to walk out of an open window of a skyscraper out of pure frustration.

At this point I said screw it and decided to find a new service as the headache not really worth it.
